I really love the iPhone experience. I can put up with low battery life, a slightly sub-standard camera and a few other minor jiggles because the interface and experience is just so good. I just have two minor wishes and both of them are pertinent right now as I’m sitting in the cafe at the London Transport Museum with a sleeping son and a pot of tea.
I really want to write a few things which have been on my mind for a while but these two issues are really stopping me.
Number one is copy and paste. The networked and connected world we live in is made so rich by that elegant attribution method the URL. I want to compare and contrast what I think to others. I want to credit others who have influenced thinking and I want to point people at what I think are definitive sources. Without copy and paste this is near nigh impossible and the iPhone is sadly crippled as a viable Internet device in the way a netbook is. I can’t retweet or point people at things I’ve found and social software like twitter may just be the tipping point of the iPhonearati demanding this feature before they walk.
The second is a keyboard. Not an integrated one but a bluetooth one. One which maybe contains a stand I can attach my iPhone to.
I had an external one for a Palm almost 10 years ago and another for a Handspring Visor and one for an iPaq. Apart from an old beloved and mourned Psion Series 3, I haven’t been as happy with a handheld before. I agree with Steve Jobs when he calls things scribble toys and for proper writing I don’t want to finger peck or thumb type as on a Blackberry. I just want a fold out keyboard. If part of it’s case could become a stand for my iPhone that would be great.
I don’t want much eh? It seems like I’m not alone Kevin Marks wants a 7” iPhone like thing which talks to Apple’s lovely and very satisfying Bluetooth keyboard.
Once I’ve got my wish of course I will want a text editor with syntax highlighting and a local App Engine develoment environment or similar. Oh and a pony.
p.s. will put the links in when I get home
